History of Beverley Dawn Wines

wine label

In 1984 Montagu suffered floods and the apricot orchard that was planted at Montagu Vines was washed away. The owners at the time replaced the orchard with a vineyard. The grape variety (Cultivar) planted was Chenin Blanc. The crop was sold to the local co-op

In 2006, Richard and Beverley Ilett purchased Montagu Vines and the small farm Fairview. Historically the vineyard had always sold its harvest of ± 9 tonnes of Chenin Blanc to Uitvlucht Co-op. The vines were nearly 38 years old and passing their prime production

Sadly on the 15th September 2006 Beverley suddenly passed away. Richard decided to have a wine made in memory of Beverley from the 2007 harvest. He wanted to try and capture in the wine the dream they both shared in Montagu Vines, by using 100% of his grapes in the memorial wine. Alwyn Liebenberg of Boplaas fame (now the new wine maker at Uitvlucht) was approached and asked if he would make the wine. Alwyn agreed and from then on total focus was given to producing a top quality harvest. It was agreed that 5,000 litres would be made. The harvest was a family affair with all members and close friends participating. Alwyn also involved the family in every step of the wine making.

Beverley Dawn Chenin Blanc is a light slightly off dry fruity wine made from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes that were grown at Montagu Vines.

Yet again in November 2008 the weather was going to play a major roll in the agricultural affairs of Montagu Vines. A devastating flood hit the village completely washing away the irrigation to the vines and depositing over 2000 cubic meters of sterile soil in the vineyard. 300 newly planted vines were washed away. All attempts were made throughout 2009 to save the vineyard but it was clear it had been too badly damaged. In May 2010 the vineyard was removed and replaced with an olive grove.

Beverley Dawn Chenin Blanc won Silver medals in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
