OUR STORY

In the winter of 2014, after years in corporate and academic life in Johannesburg, we decided it was time for a change. We dreamed of a small lock-up-and-go base from which we could travel and enjoy a quieter rhythm of life. And so our search began, with Hermanus on our radar as a potential ‘Plan A.’ But after five cold, rainy, and windswept days, we decided we needed a ‘Plan B.’

Having passed through Montagu on the way to Hermanus, something about the valley lingered, and we found ourselves returning — this time to look at small farms.

The agent mentioned a town farm with an olive grove… and, almost as an afterthought, that it also happened to be a guesthouse.

After visiting Montagu Vines, we fell unexpectedly in love. However, before signing on the dotted line, we did some due diligence, which included retracing our steps through all the towns we’d previously explored — this time visiting ‘platteland’ guesthouses to understand an industry we knew nothing about.

Fast forward to 2015 when we took a leap of faith and made Montagu Vines our home.
Today, we’re grateful for that twist of fate, for this land, and for every guest who becomes part of our story.

THE PROPERTY’S STORY

The name 'Montagu Vines' comes from the vineyards that were originally planted on the property. Over the years, however, the vines were destroyed by floods, and in May 2010, the vineyard was replaced with 350 olive trees.

The main Victorian homestead, built between 1900 and 1905, sits on what was once part of Montagu’s historic Oudam town-farm, now a conservation area.

Lovingly restored and surrounded by manicured lawns, rose beds, and an olive grove, the property offers eight stylishly appointed en-suite rooms with patios and views of the Langeberg Mountains.

Montagu Vines is a destination space where comfort, natural beauty, and genuine South African hospitality come together in one peaceful corner of the Klein Karoo.

Every detail reflects our personal touch — a hands-on approach that has shaped the guesthouse’s reputation for warm service, thoughtful comfort, and effortless, relaxed luxury.
